Your Personal Happiness House

I don't know of anyone whose favorite season is Winter. If you do fit into this rare and offensive category, you really ought to sort out what is important to you. I mean, I guess you can have your own opinion (but you also have the right to be wrong).

Where was I going with this?

Ah yes. Spring. It's officially here. Even Mother Nature has decided to play along some. Rain instead of snow. The beginnings of flowers. Wearing shorts outside. Little things that detail the beautiful time of year that is Spring.

It is most often the little things that make the biggest differences in how a person feels.

Think of a house....a happiness house, if you will. The structure of the house will be the same as the structure of any house. A foundation. Load bearing beams. Far too many nails. A roof. These represent the basic structures of our lives. We have families, friends, education, and ambition but with just those things all we have is bare walls, empty rooms, and possibly a bathroom (also a necessity). But what do people choose to do with that space? Couches and chairs. Pictures and paintings. Doors maybe? A bed. And even more yet, there are books and toys and accessories and crafts. These pieces make the house you fill, unique and special....and happy.

Your life is given to you standard with the opportunity to deck it out with any number of "decorations". We will almost always make choices that we believe will make us happy. Those choices are what add color and beauty to our life.

They are often little or simple joys.

One of my favorite activities is to be in the same room as my friends, reading. No words needing to be said out loud. Two people, two separate books, and some good lighting. It's that simple for me. It makes me happy and adds color and decoration to my life.

For some people it is excelling at school or in an occupation that brings a simple joy. Recognition from a boss or supervisor can hugely decorate someone's life. For other people it is time with family and doing activities together. There are thousands of opportunities for finding happiness and far too often we expect it to be big things. A job promotion. A new baby. A budding romance. All are great but we cannot hinge our happiness on these. We create our happiness by doing things within our control with the resources we've been given to add color to our lives.

Happiness is more often than not a choice. Not a choice to be happy but a choice to do something that then induces happiness.
